Letters from George Alexander Hugh Murray to his family, 1916

Letters relating to the First World War service of 1379 Sergeant George Alexander Hugh Murray, 14th Infantry Battalion. In this series of letters, Murray details the period from his continuing convalescence in England to his return to service on the Western Front. Continuing injuries prevent him from returning to service in early 1916 so he takes time to describe life at Abbey Wood as well as other significant events. One such event that Murray describes is the march that took place on 16 February 1916 when 1,200 ANZACs marched through the streets of London to St. Margaret's Church to a memorial service for all the colonial troops that fell at Gallipoli. After returning to service in April, he details his redeployment to Egypt and then to France. Murray goes on to describe the Battle of Pozieres and the fighting at Flanders in Belgium.
