Description

Letters relating to the First World War service of Major Oliver 'Trooper Bluegum' Hogue, 14th Light Horse Regiment. In a series of letters to members of his family as well as his colleague at the Sydney Morning Herald, William Farmer Whyte, Hogue details his experiences in the First World War. Originally serving at Gallipoli with 2nd Light Horse Brigade, he returned to Egypt and was subsequently transferred to 6th Light Horse Regiment, the Imperial Camel Corps, and finally 14th Light Horse Regiment. Hogue's letters frequently refer to the fearlessness and substantial achievements of the Australian troops, especially at the Battle of Romani. The letters are also critical of the British press coverage of the war, with the achievements of the ICC and Australian troops largely ignored. Hogue also details the reported cruelty of the Turkish forces at Gallipoli, and the fighting at Magdhaba and Rafa.
