Description

Letters and postcard relating to the First World War service of 250 Private James Hodgen, 14th Machine Gun Company (5th Machine Gun Battalion). Having been wounded in action around Villers-Bretonneux on 26 April 1918, Hodgen was sent to England for hospitalisation. Whilst there he wrote a letter to his mother detailing his time in England so far and providing a detailed account of the fighting around Villers-Bretonneux in April 1918. Accompanying the letter is a postcard of the town and surrounding area with numbering at various locations on the image. These numbers correlate to the events Hodgen details in his letter. Also included is a letter from the Australian War Memorial at Fouilloy near Villers-Bretonneux in 1978 detailing that his original letter, originally thought lost, had been located. This file contains:
Letter from James Hodgen to his mother, Grantham, 30 June 1918;
Letter from J. E. Harris, Australian Memorial, Fouilloy, France, to James Hodgen, Rockdale, Australia, 4 December 1978;
Postcard of Villers-Bretonneux with number annotations, [date unknown].
