The letters were written to various members of his immediate family between January and March 1918. In these letters, Gallwey writes of his continuing training in signals, passing the examinations with honours, and his selection to become an instructor, training for this role in Dunstable. He also records his observations of the domestic situation in England, including the food shortage and increasing crime rate, and his own visit to London. Gallwey provides commentary on the progress of the war, including the German Spring Offensive in March 1918, and writes of his support for the war effort and his extensive pride in serving.
