Description

Letters and newspaper clipping relating to the First World War service of 1879 Driver Douglas Barrett-Lennard, 3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade. These handwritten transcriptions of the original letters were made by the Barrett-Lennard family and donated in 1928. After Barrett-Lennard was killed in action on 17 July 1915, several people wrote to his family expressing their condolences. Among them are: letters from several commanding officers, including Major Alfred Joseph Bessell-Browne and Colonel Joseph John Talbot Hobbs; letters from fellow soldiers including his friend Tom Cusack who was also in the 8th Battery. These letters detail the manner of Barrett-Lennard’s death and laud his bravery and courage as well as his popularity with his fellow soldiers and commanding officers. Also in this file is a newspaper article published in ‘The West Australian’ which detail what many of the letters have detailed and a letter from Colonel Hobbs to Barrett-Lennard’s old school asking that his name be memorialised in the school’s chapel.
