Description

Manuscript relating to the service, during the First World War, of Major Donald Dunbar Coutts, 6th Australian Field Ambulance. The diary within the manuscript covers Coutts’ the period of 1916-1920 and details the towns he travels through and marches between camps. He gives accounts of the battles he served such as Menin Road and he describes the effects of an artillery barrage on his pill box. Coutts writes of the effects of gas and treatments for trench foot and mentions the sensation of shrapnel knocking off his helmet in March 1918. Additional contextual information has been added. This includes photographs, notes, souvenirs, battalion orders, instructions, maps, war diary reports, a citation for his DSO, articles from the "Red Diamond", autographed menus, Christmas cards and biographical information related to the award of his MBE.
