Description
Diary relating to the First World War service of Mary Ann (Bessie) Pocock, Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS). This handwritten diary contains entries for the period September 1914 to May 1915, from her enlistment in and departure from Australia to her service as a senior sister with the 2nd Australian General Hospital in Cairo. Notable among the entries are her descriptions of injured and ill patients and their treatment, her detachment to take charge of a temporary hospital for the wounded in Ismailia, and her sightseeing in Egypt (in particular the pyramids and Sphinx, and the architecture and living conditions of Cairo). Pocock also writes positively of her fellow nurses, with the exception of Matron Nellie Gould, a nurse she served with in the Boer War and developed a considerable dislike towards.
