Description

Diary relating to the First World War service of Mary Ann ‘Bessie’ Pocock, Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS). This handwritten diary contains entries for the period 13 March 1915 to 14 December 1915, primarily detailing her service as matron of the Hospital Ship Assaye which evacuated patients from Gallipoli. Pocock’s entries describe the soldiers evacuated from the peninsula suffering from battle wounds and/or disease, as well as the supplies she purchased for the patients whenever she went ashore. She also mentions the inspections of the hospital ship and includes a check list of medical supplies. On one of the occasions the Assaye got near to the peninsula Pocock recorded her observations, including that of Cape Helles, Anzac and Achi Baba.
