- Vol. 4: Diaries of Thomas James Richards, 9 November 1916 - 31 May 1918
< Previous Record | Next Record >Diary relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant Thomas James Richards, 1st Australian Infantry Battalion. The entries in this diary span the period 3 November 1917 to 31 May 1918 and cover Richards’ convalescence and subsequent discharge from hospital in England, resulting in his return to the 1st Infantry Battalion in France in early February 1918. The battalion was one of many involved in stopping the German Spring Offensive in March and April, something which Richards details. The entries also cover his return to England for medical reasons due to a back injury sustained in the line, where he was struck of strength. This diary was originally bound by Richards into the last of four volumes and donated to the Australian War Memorial in 1933.
