Description

Diary relating to the First World War and post-war service of Mary Ann ‘Bessie’ Pocock. This handwritten diary contains regular entries for the periods 28 February to 5 December 1919 and 7 April 1936 to 29 October 1937. The first series of entries in 1919 detail Pocock’s final months in England attending various events and sightseeing in several cities, including London and Edinburgh. In May she returns for Australia aboard the SS Zealandia and her entries describe life aboard as well as ports of call, such as Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. After arriving back in Australia at the end of June, Pocock’s entries culminate with the end of her appointment to the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in October. The next series of entries detail her life in 1936 and 1937, Pocock having earlier established a convalescent hospital at Chatswood in 1924 which she named ‘Ismailia’ after her time in Egypt.
