German Model 1917 steel helmet
Description
German Model 1917 steel helmet with leather liner. The helmet is painted field grey and has a significant dent on the front of the shell. Three sections of leather spaced equidistant around the inside of the helmet make up the liner which is fitted to the pressed steel band attached to the helmet by three rivets. All three retain their white cotton cushion pads stuffed with horsehair. The string used to join the top of the leather sections is missing as is the leather chinstrap. A pair of ventilating lugs on either side of the helmet also provide the mounting points for the seldom-used detachable frontal brow plate (not present). Handwritten in ink on the interiorof the shell is what appears to be, 'P HEIDRICH' and 'G I'.
