Description
Wooden sign found on the main road near Neuve in France. The following place names have been painted on the sign to indicate the direction in each case. PLOEGSTEERT, HYDE PARK CORNER, RED LODGE, LE ROMARIN, CANTEEN CORNER, NEUVE EGLISE. The sign is heavily damaged by shellfire.
History / Summary
Signs such as this were used by troops to record the locations of trench lines and nearby towns. The salvage of this sign was first recorded in the Australian War Records Section register on 3 May 1919; they record that it was 'found on main Road near Neuve Eglise'. Research indicates that this sign was likely recovered from le Don, approximately 3 km west of Ploegsteert and 400 m east of le Romarin.
