Description
M1898/05 Sword Bayonet and Scabbard. The hilt has a cross guard with a back turned quillon and no muzzle ring. The grips are wood with eight diagonal ribs on each side. The Pommel has a mortice slot and a push button locking bolt. The blade with a single fuller to each side swells towards the spear point and is stamped Alex Coppel Soligen on the ricasso and a crown over 17 on the back edge. The scabbard is all steel with a tear drop frog stud. The blade is polished steel and the other metal parts blued.
History / Summary
This type of bayonet fits the German Mauser 98 rifle and was often refered to during the First World War as the 'butchers knife'.
