He trained in Egypt before landing at Gallipoli with his battalion on 25 April 1915. On that day he was reported missing but was later located. He remained on Gallipoli until 31 May when he was evacuated to Egypt with influenza. He remained in Egypt for the rest of 1915. Draper transferred briefly, in February 1916 to 58 Battalion, before being transferred again a month later, to 57 Battalion. Twelve days later he was transferred to 13 Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) and posted to 52 Battery.

On 16 June 1916 he embarked for France for service on the Western Front, landing at Marseilles on 23 June. He was transferred to 25 FAB in July 1916 and was accidentally wounded on 13 August suffering gun shot wounds to his head and upper arms. Draper left hospital on 11 October 1916, but was re-admitted a fortnight later with influenza. After he developed pneumonia he was transferred to England. He returned to France to serve with 13 FAB in May 1917 and was posted to 49 Battery, where he was promoted to bombardier and then to corporal. On 28 June 1918 Draper was admitted to hospital with a contusion to his head, caused by another accident. He rejoined 13 FAB in July and served another three months, before being returned to Australia 8 October 1918 for transport duty.
