Embroidered French souvenir handkerchief : Private H B Eagles, 2 Battalion, AIF
Description
Cream silk chiffon handkerchief with a lace edge. Embroidered in one corner, in red, white, blue, green, yellow and black, with a hot air balloon and gondola made up of the Allied flags. The gondola itself is composed of the United States flag and the Union Jack. It is attached to the balloon with pale green stemstitched shrouds. Underneath the gondola is embroidered 'SOUVENIR DE FRANCE'.
History / Summary
Purchased by 51A Private Harold Blandford Eagles, of 2 Battalion, AIF, as present to send home to his niece in Australia. He enlisted on 6 March 1916 and returned to Australia on 20 April 1919.
