Commemorative brooch : Private R Maddison, 18 Battalion, AIF
Description
Circular brass brooch with a decorative scroll edge attached to the outer rim. The centre of the brooch contains the photograph of Private Maddison in uniform. The pin fastening on the back has been broken off.
History / Summary
This brooch commemorates Private Robert Maddison who served with 18 Battalion and was killed in action on 19 May 1918. Maddison was a railway shunter from Newcastle, NSW and enlisted in the AIF on 10 July 1917 aged 30. He embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ulysses in December 1917 and arrived in England for training in February the following year. He later embarked for France on 6 May 1918 and was killed in action 13 days later, on 19 May at Ville-sur-Ancre. Maddison is buried at Dive Copse British Cemetery near Sailly-le-Sec.
