Shrapnel brooch : Mrs E Fryer, Society of Friends
Description
Brooch made from a piece of shrapnel. The shrapnel is mounted on a gilt scroll with the words 'AIMEZ-VOUS LES UNS LES AUTRES' (love one another). Underneath the scroll is a pair of wings from which hangs a small bell with an embossed cross pattee and the name ' SERMAIZE'. A brooch pin and hook are attached to the back of the shrapnel piece.
History / Summary
Brooch made from a piece of shrapnel found at Sermaize, on the Marne, France. The brooch was owned by Mrs Ethel Helena Fryer (nee Ubsdell). Mrs Fryer was a Quaker working for war victim relief, together with her husband, Charles Fryer. They were based at Sermaize in France from 1917 to 1919.
