Description

Circular bronze medallion surmounted by the Queen's crown. Obverse shows Simpson and his donkey assisting a wounded man, a laurel wreath, the date '1915' and the word 'ANZAC'. Reverse shows a map of Australia and New Zealand with the Southern Cross superimposed over it, fern fronds and the engraved name of the recipient 'J.F. MOLONY'. The medallion is in its original display case with compliments slip from the Commonwealth Government enclosed.

History / Summary

The Anzac Medallion was issued by the Australian government in 1967 to commemorate the 1965 50th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. The medallion was issued to surviving veterans of the campaign or their next of kin. James Francis Molony as born near Bourke, New South Wales in 1895. He was working as a drover and a was member of the Militia (39th Infantry) when he enlisted in the AIF in November 1914. In February 1915 1399 Private J F Molony embarked on HMAT Seang Bee with the 2nd Reinforcements, 3 Battalion. He was wounded on Gallipoli in June 1915, and in in April 1916 tranferred to the Anzac Provost Corps, seeing service attached to various Light Horse units. Corporal Molony returned to Australia in July 1919 aboard HMT Malta.
