Anzac Commemorative Medallion : E E Newell

Circular bronze medallion surmounted by the Queen's crown. The obverse shows Simpson and his donkey assisting a wounded man and the date '1915' above a laurel wreath and the word 'ANZAC'. The reverse shows a map of Australia and New Zealand with the Southern Cross superimposed over it, fern fronds and the engraved name of the recipient 'E.E.NEWELL'. The medallion is housed in its case of issue.

Associated with the service of 151 Private Ernest Edward Newell, born in Bolton, England on 20 October 1890. Newell, a 24 year old labourer, enlisted in 27 Battalion on 11 February 1915 and sailed from Adelaide aboard HMAT Geelong on 31 May. After arriving in Egypt the battalion spent two months training before landing at Gallipoli on 12 September. Newell returned to Egypt in early January 1916 and then in March proceeded to France and the Western Front. On 25 March 1917 Newell was severely wounded in action when he received a gun shot wound to his neck and left arm. He was evacuated to England for treatment and returned to Australia as medically unfit on 27 July aboard HMAT Demosthenes. Newell was discharged on 29 October. During the Second World War Newell enlisted in the militia on 16 April 1942 as Lieutenant S65463. He was discharged from 4 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps on 25 November 1945.
