History / Summary

Made by QX669 Sergeant William Albert Kieft of Coolangatta, Queensland. Kieft was born at Dubbo NSW on 8 October 1908 and enlisted on 3 November 1939. He was assigned to 7 Division (Headquarters) Signals and fought in the Middle East, Greece and Crete, where all his equipment was lost. He carved this spoon from the wood of a mandarin tree to replace part of his mess kit. Kieft was successfully evacuated from Crete, returned to Australia and served in the Pacific War before being discharged on 3 February 1945. There are three photographs showing Sergeant Kieft working in Gaza in October 1942 in the Memorial's collection (see 025183, 025184 and 025188).
