1914-15 Star : Gunner G R B Williams, 3 Field Artillery Brigade, AIF
1914-15 Star. Impressed reverse with recipient's details.
George Robert Bertie Williams was born at Randwick, New South Wales in 1895. He was serving in the militia with 37 Artillery Battery and working as a draftsman in Perth when he enlisted in the AIF on 17 August 1914. After initial training he was assigned to No. 8 Battery of the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade as a Sergeant, with the service number 1897. He embarked with his unit aboard HMAT Medic (A7) at Fremantle on 31 October 1914.
While undergoing further training in Egypt, Williams was discharged from the AIF to take up a temporary commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the British Royal Field Artillery on 18 April 1915. He served at Gallipoli, sustaining a gunshot wound to the lower right leg at Cape Helles on 30 July 1915, and was invalided back to Australia. He arrived at Fremantle on 27 September, 1915, and appears to have undertaken no further military service.
