Souvenir pennant : HMAS Sydney

Triangular black felt souvenir pennant. Screen printed in yellow, white and brown with 'H.M.A.S SYDNEY' and the ship's badge showing a white background with a brown anchor, star at the top and battlement in the middle of the anchor, all within a rope circle surmounted by a naval crown. Beneath the circle is a scroll bearing the motto 'THOROUGH AND READY'.

This pennant was made as a souvenir for the crew of HMAS Sydney (III). HMAS Sydney was a Majestic class aircraft carrier which was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) on 16 December 1948 under the command of Captain Roy R Dowling DSO RAN. She was the first aircraft carrier of the RAN and serving in this role during the Korean War. During the Korean War the Sydney saw heavy action embarking Hawker Sea Fury and Fairey Firefly aircraft in hundreds of ground attack missions against North Korean and Communist Chinese forces engaged against the United Nations. The Sydney served as a fast troop transport during the Vietnam War conducting twenty four transport runs between Australia and South Vietnam June 1965 and February 1972. On 12 November 1973 HMAS Sydney III was paid off for disposal by the RAN. In October 1975 she was sold to a South Korean steel company and left Sydney under tow in December 1975 for scrapping.
