771 Private Thomas Redfern was a 24 year old carpenter from Manly, New South Wales, when he enlisted in the AIF on 28 August 1914. He had been born in England and had served 18 months in the 1st Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment before he emigrated to Australia. Redfern was assigned to G Company, 13 Battalion and sailed for overseas service aboard HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1914. Redfern landed on Gallipoli with his battalion on the afternoon of 25 April 1915. On 2 August he was evacuated from Anzac suffering from enteric and only rejoined his unit in February 1916. The battalion arrived in France in June 1916 and took part in the Battle of Pozieres in August. While on leave in England at the end of the year Redfern became sick and was hospitalised there, returning to his battalion in May 1917. Redfern was wounded during the first Battle of Villers-Bretonneux on 3 April 1918 but elected to remain with his unit. On 22 September 1918 he received severe shrapnel wounds to both buttocks while serving on the Hindenburg Outpost-Line. He was evacuated to 48 (British) Casualty Clearing Station, and then to England, and saw no further action. Redfern returned to Australia on 9 December 1918.
