Description

One-piece canvas photographer's backdrop, painted in a monochrome sepia. There is an obvious demarcation line 2.4 metres from the top of the sheet which forms the division between the vertical section and the horizontal floor section. The vertical section has been painted to represent the interior of a rotunda room, with domed roof and a pair of corbelled columned arches either side of a plain curving wall. A cartouche decorates the ceiling line between the arches. There are potted palms evident at the base of each column. In the background between the arches, the designer has painted the outline of distant walls, arched windows and additional palms. With the exception of the top edge, all other edges bear evidence of regular nail holes and associated stretching of the canvas. There is a pencilled signature about half way down the proper left side of the vertical section.

History / Summary

Hand-painted canvas backdrop used in exterior locations (often the courtyard of their house) by husband and wife photograhers Louis and Antoinette Thuillier of Vignacourt, France.
