History / Summary

This kilt was collected by the Australian war correspondent Charles Bean, in the vicinity of Pozieres, on 25 August 1918, and handed in to the Australian War Records Section. It was described as a 'Scotch kilt possibly left during the 2nd Battle of Pozieres', implying that it had either been abandoned or removed from a soldier needing medical treatment. It was not associated with a body.

The Second Battle of Pozieres was a name used only by Australians, and refers to the Battle of Mouquet Farm, located less than 2 kilometres from Pozieres, which began on 5 August 1916. British troops also took part in the battle, and this kilt is thought to have belonged to a member of one of the Gordon Highlander regiments serving with the 15th (Scottish) Division.
