British notice board collected from the Ypres Battlefield area by SGT Brown VC DCM and PTE W Wise and PTE F KENT of the 20th Battalion. The sign is constructed of two panels of wood and is held together by three smaller planks nailed to the back. The sign bears evidence of extensive damage, showing scorch marks and shrapnel damage. The top right hand corner is missing revealing the dovetailed end on the backing planks. It is stencilled with black paint with the words ' TO{ IDIOT CORNER, WESTHOEK, HELLES TRACK, WATTLE DUMP, ANZAC, YORKSHIRE DUMP' beneath these is a large stencilled right facing arrow . There is a thin black border painted around the edge of the sign. This notice board also bears a metal plaque denoting 'NOTICE BOARD COLLECTED FROM YPRES BATTLEFIELD BY SGT BROWN VC DCM PTE W WISE AND PTE B KENT FOR THE 20th BATTALION WAR MUSEUM.'

History / Summary

Signs such as these were made by troops on the Western Front, to provide waymarkers to trenches, nearby towns and arms dumps. This sign was initially collected by Sergeant Walter Ernest Brown VC DCM, Private Wise and Private Kent, all of 20 Battalion for a proposed 20 Battalion museum. Instead the items collected were donated to the Australian War Records Section for the National Museum that was being planned.

It is likely that this sign comes from the Ypres area, as Sergeant Brown collected numerous signs from this area.
