Improvised sign, 'GAP D UNDER M.G. FIRE' : Hangard Wood, France
Description
Black painted sign board, made from a section of wood cut from a single plank, and marked in white painted letters 'GAP [right facing arrow] D UNDER M.G. FIRE'. Four iron nails driven through the centre of the sign, which probably attached it to a supporting post, have been bent over at the rear.
History / Summary
This sign was collected from trenches at Hangard Wood, south of Villers Bretonneux, by the Australian War Records Section. It seems to indicate that one of the gaps in the wire protecting the front line trenches, through which access to No Man's Land could be gained, was under observation and fire by a German machine gun. The front line ran through part of Hangard Wood before the Allied offensive of 8 August 1918.
