Description
Tin plated steel container for carrying three days rations of coffee, sugar and salt. The container is rectangular in shape with a circular screw top lid in each end. The main body is divided into two compartments, one each for coffee and sugar. One lid is hollow and has a press-in lid. This is used to store a small quantity of salt. The outside of the tin is marked with five ribs. The centre line indicates where the compartments meet and the other lines are used to indicate the level of the contents.
History / Summary
Collected by 1502 Second Corporal Hubert De Vere Alexander, a New South Welshman who served with 4 Field Company Engineers. Alexander, a certified mine manager from Stanmore in Sydney enlisted on 16 February 1915. His award of the Serbian Gold Cross for Bravery was gazetted in February 1917. On 17 August 1918 Alexander, aged 31, was killed in action at Lihons near Rosieres. He is buried at Heath Cemetery at Harbonnieres.
