French Army Cap with badges: 5th Battalion, 3rd Zouves, French Army
French Army Zouave cap (Khaki) with two badges, a half crescent moon and number three representing to the Zouaves, a light infantry regiment of the French Army.
It was presented by a member of the 5th Battalion, 3rd Zouaves to an Australian soldier of the 13th Battalion AIF. Both were occupying one of the 'International Posts' at the Junction of the British and French Armies betwen April and July, 1918.
In the spring and summer 1918 Australian troops held the extreme right wing of the British empire forces in France at the junction of the British and French armies. There they shared outposts with French troops, often swapping rations and souvenirs. French Zouaves - a glamorous type of infantry raised from European men in North Africa - gave their caps to the neighbouring Australians of the 13th Battalion.
