German man-trap : 6th Battalion AIF
Description
Steel man-trap with curved trigger base plate and two semi-circular toothed jaws. A degraded leather fob held in place with a cloth coated wire covers the spring arm fulcrum. The trap has been disarmed with the safety clips removed from the object.
History / Summary
German soldiers laid this trap to catch night patrols moving through no man's land in Herleville Wood in 1918. It was found by men of the 6th Battalion on the edge of a ravine below Herleville village on 23 August 1918. It is likely to have been modified from a boar trap.
