Saxe-Coburg-Gotha Carl Eduard War Cross
Saxe-Coburg-Gotha Carl Eduard War Cross. Unnamed as issued. Obverse: A Maltese cross with 'CE' surmounted by a crown on the centre disc and surrounded by a green enamel laurel wreath attached to the arms of the cross. Reverse: In the centre a disc with the arms of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha surrounded by the words 'FIDELITER ET CONSTANTER' on a circlet, and large vertical pin brooch.
The Carl Eduard War Cross was founded on 19 July 1916 as a single class pinback decoration for bravery and military merit, awarded without regard to rank. Eligibility requirements were similar to those for the Oval Silver Duke Carl Eduard Medal with Crown and Sword Clasp - one must have already received the Iron Cross 1st Class and have served in, or be serving in, the 95th Infantry Regiment. Only 97 awards of the cross were made, making it one of the rarest German military decorations. This medal forms part of a collection assembled by the Memorial in the 1920s for display.
