Description

Imperial Russian Order of St George Medal 4th Class. Unnumbered. Obverse: The head of Czar Nicholas II facing left with a cyrillic inscription around the circumference. Reverse: The inscription in cyrillic 'For Valour - 1st Step'. Fitted with a loose ring suspender and a piece of 27 mm yellow ribbon with three black stripes of equal widths, folded in the Russian triangular style.

History / Summary

This medal was awarded for valour to Russian and Allied troops during the First World War. It was instituted in 1912 by Emperor Nicholas II to reward men whose deeds did not merit the award of the Cross of St George, part of the higher related Order of St George.The four classes of the St George Medal were a gold medal with a bow on the ribbon, gold, silver with a bow on the ribbon and silver. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916 and his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
