Souvenir trench art inkstand : Lieutenant A H Smith-Finkell, Headquarters Australian Corps, AIF
Trench art inkstand set on a laminated wooden base cut from a cross section of an aircraft propeller. There are four German Mauser 7.92mm cartridges set into the base. A fifth cartridge has been let into one of the cartridges at angle of about 70 degrees. All the cartridges were made by the Deutsche Metallpatronenfabrik factory at Karlsruhe, Germany, in August 1918. The inkwell, made from a brass nose-cap from a shell, sits on a brass hexagonal plate. The lid of the inkwell takes the form of a small brass slouch hat with a copper hat band and 'Rising Sun' badge. It is attached to the inkwell by a hinge.
This inkstand was acquired by Lieutenant Albert Horace Smith-Finkell during his service in France with Headquarters Australian Corps. He enlisted for service on 7 January 1916 and returned to Australia on 7 July 1919.
