William John Cox as a corporal, 15 Battery, 5 Brigade Artillery, France, 1916-1918 [Memoirs]
Discusses: why Australia went to war; landing at Gallipoli; his enlistment during recruiting week in July 1915; pre-war employment; sent to Melbourne Showgrounds recruitment camp; issue of initial clothing and and equipment; outbreak of meningitis in camp and cancellation of leave; 6th Artillery Brigade formed under the command of Colonel Harold Kohen, who was the chief of the Carlton Brewery; Cox sent to the 16th Battery, 6th Brigade stationed at Keilor; known to friends as "Texas" especially to mate Harry Matthews(?); hospitalised due to a training injury; despatched to Egypt on the troopship SS Persic; hospitalised at Tel el Kebir with a throat infection, released in time to sail to France; describes the winter in France; action at Pozieres, Bapaume, Fleurs and Bullecourt; relates deaths due to concealed weapons which caused a number of deaths.
