Keith Payne VC as a private rifleman 1st Battalion The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), Korea 1952-1953, interviewed by Bill Fogarty.

History / Summary

Payne VC speaks of his childhood in Ingham district in Queensland; registered under the Manpower Act when he left school in 1945; apprenticeship as a cabinet maker; joined the Regimental Cadets at sixteen years of age; transferred to Citizens Military Forces (CMF); enlisted in regular army; training; his posting in B Company 1 RAR; the operational environment in Korea - the daily routine, living in bunkers in the ground, rations and cooking, clothing and equipment; the climatic conditions; the weapons and munitions; United Nations Command (UNC) use of minefields; patrolling at night in front of defensive positions; the Chinese Army's tactics and equipment; Operation Fauna - a company raid aimed at taking Chinese prisoners to update allied intelligence; the casualty evacuation system; his view of leadership and morale within 1 RAR and the supporting Commonwealth units at the time. Payne also speaks briefly of his role in the 2nd Battalion The Pacific Islands Regiment (2 PIR), 1966-1968.
