Description

McCarthy speaks of his sea voyage from Australia to Egypt; overnight sailing to Gallipoli; landing on Gallipoli; an attack by Turkish troops; evacuation from Gallipoli; France; describes attack on German machine gun post for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross; and that he was Mentioned in Despatches twice and wounded twice. Date of VC award : 1918-08-23 Awarded Victoria Cross for action near Madame Wood, west of Vermandovillers, France, whilst serving as a lieutenant with 16th Battalion, 4th Brigade, 4th Division. The forward movement of McCarthy's company was blocked by German machine guns. McCarthy crossed open ground to attack the enemy trench. McCarthy inflicted serious causalities and had captured much of the trench before he was joined by one of his men.
