Description

Berlin, Germany. C. 1944-03-08. This area of Berlin was photographed in 1943-09 and again on 1944-03-08 after a massive series of attacks by RAF Bomber Command which began in 1943-11. Following is a key to the annotations: 1. Reichstag; burned out in 1933, now further damaged. 2. Ministry of Armaments and Munitions; gutted. 3. French Embassy; gutted. 4. British Embassy; gutted. 5. Ministry of Food and Agriculture; severely damaged by fire. 6. Dr Goebbels' private house; top floors burned out, but roof repaired. 7. Old President's Chancellery (probably Ribbentrop's official residence as Foreign Secretary) and Foreign Office; both damaged by fire, but considerable repairs to the former. 8. Hitler's Chancellery and residence; damaged by fire, but roof repaired. 9. New Reich Chancery, undamaged. 10. Ministry of Transport and State Railway Directorate; mostly gutted. 11. West wing of offices of Goering, as President of Prussia; damaged, but repairs in progress. 12. Forestry Office; wrecked. 13. Potsdamer Station; wrecked. 14. Treasury; damage to roof. 15. Kaiserhof Hotel; top floors burned out. 16. Ministry of Fisheries; mostly gutted. 17. Two buildings of the Ministry of Education; damaged by fire. 18. Home Office; part of building burnt out. 19. Army Records Office; severely damaged by fire. 20. Post Office and Sorting Office; severely damaged by fire. 21. State Library; one wing damaged. 22. University; one wing damaged.
