GORDON DFC, OF RALEIGH, NSW, STUDIES HIS CHARTS JUST BEFORE THE TAKE OFF AS THE VETERAN RAAF LANCASTER "G FOR GEORGE" OF NO. 460 SQUADRON RAAF, SETS OFF ON THE 1300 MILE FLIGHT FROM PRESTWICK AERODROME, TO AUSTRALIA VIA CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES. IT WAS HER NINETY FIRST "SORTIE" FROM BRITAIN. THE OTHER NINETY WERE MADE OVER GERMANY AND ENEMY OCCUPIED TERRITORY WITH SQUADRONS FROM RAF BOMBER COMMAND. "GEORGE" WAS PRESENTED BY THE RAF TO THE AUSTRALIAN WAR MUSEUM, CANBERRA, ACT, IN RECOGNITION OF THE SERVICE SHE AND OTHER HEAVY BOMBERS OF THE RAAF SQUADRONS HAVE PERFORMED IN THE GREAT OFFENSIVE AGAINST THE NAZIS.
