Description

An Australian ex-POW, Warrant Officer K. S. Murphy of Rose Bay, NSW, cooks a meal at the camp on a blower fire before travelling to England. The Anzacs made extensive use of blower fires constructed from old tins during their captivity; the shortage of fuel made this type of cooker indispensable. Stalags 357 (in Oerbke) and XIb (in Fallingbostel), when overrun by units of the 2nd British Army, were found to be virtually Anzac prison camps. Many AIF men (some taken prisoner in Crete) and Australian and New Zealand Air Force men were freed.
