Southampton, Hampshire, England. 1945-09-23. Sergeant J. K. Fussell, of Newcastle, NSW, had a sleep in a coil of rope while waiting for the ship to sail. Big drafts of RAAF and New Zealand airmen left by the HMT Andes and returned to the Dominions via the Suez Canal. On the ship were nearly 1,000 Australians and about 1,500 New Zealanders, mostly air crew who have operated over Europe, the Atlantic, Italy and the Middle East.
