Scope note | The UNMCTT (UN Mine Clearance Training Team) originally consisted of contingents from nine countries, but only Australia remained by 1992. Its activities are conducted under the auspices of the Geneva based UN Coordinator for Afghanistan (UNOCA). The original purpose was to train Pakistan based Afghan refugees in mine and ordnance recognition and basic clearance techniques. In January 1991, this broadened to include the planning and supervision of mine clearance activities in Afghanistan. In July 1993, Australia announced it would withdraw from HQ UNOCA and extracted its teams in December 1993. |
