Shared Experience: Art and War
Ballet of wind and rain
Ballet of wind and rain was painted in Holland or Belgium late in the war, in February 1945, when Colahan was travelling through recently liberated regions of war-torn Europe during his second appointment to paint the Australian forces. This work, with its loose brushwork, captures four fighter pilots combating the elements. As Allied forces advanced into north-west Europe, squadrons were based in Holland and Belgium to support the European war’s final campaigns.
