Shared Experience: Artists Francis Lymburner (1916–1972)
Art and War
Lymburner trained at the Brisbane Technical College, later exhibiting with the CAS in Sydney. He was conscripted in 1942 and assigned to the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps, where he was discharged in 1944. Between 1950 and 1963 he travelled throughout Europe and the United Kingdom. Predominantly figurative, his work is characterised by loose sculptural forms, influenced by French artists Jules Pascin, Georges Rouault, Chaim Soutine and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska.
