Coming from the dry Adelaide landscape, Bowen was delighted by the green of England, and it became a motif in many of her landscapes:

I can never forget my first sight of the infinitely repeated layers of young green beech leaves, spraying down from the huge, delicately-drawn trees. I had never imagined such a prodigality of verdure nor such radiantly blue distances.
