Thousands attend Anzac Day 2018 National Ceremony

2 mins read

Dr Brendan Nelson, Director of the Australian War Memorial, today said he was proud to see the large crowd attend today’s Anzac Day National Ceremony.

“An estimated 11,500 people attended the National Ceremony and veterans’ march, bringing the total number of people at both Anzac Day ceremonies at the Australian War Memorial to 49,500,” Dr Nelson said.

“Anzac Day is a time for all Australians to come together to commemorate the sacrifices made by Australian servicemen and servicewomen in every theatre of war and on operational service.”

The National Ceremony Commemorative Address was delivered by The Honourable Kim Beazley and a moving additional Address was given by Second World War veteran and member of the legendary “Rats of Tobruk” Mr. Robert (Bob) Semple OAM.

“For those who were lucky enough to hear the address from Bob Semple today, it will be a day they will surely never forget. His remarkable address was told with clarity, humilty and love for his mates. We are honoured by his presence here today and grateful to him for his service.”

The Memorial is open for the remainder of Anzac Day. Dr Nelson urged people to attend the Last Post Ceremony in the Memorial’s Commemorative Area at 4.55 pm.

Correction: Earlier this morning the Australian War Memorial reported that Colonel Susan Neuhaus was the first female to deliver the Dawn Service Commemorative Address. This was incorrect. The 2011 Dawn Service address was delivered by Senior Army Chaplain Catie Inches-Ogden. We apologise for this oversight.
