Volunteer Family History Service trialled at the Memorial

As part of National Family History Month, the Australian War Memorial will be trialling a volunteer-run Family History Service each weekend in August. The initiative will see trained volunteers on hand in the Memorial’s Research Centre to help people uncover their family’s military history through our online collections.

Family history has become extremely popular in recent years, and Head of the Research Centre Robyn van Dyk said that Family History Month will provide the perfect opportunity to see how this new service resonates with visitors.

“To be able to share the Memorial’s invaluable digital collection with our visitors and help them navigate the various layers of information is a thrill for our volunteers, who are well-versed not only in the content but also in the technology.”

The service will be available on Saturday mornings and Sundays throughout August. Visitors are encouraged to make use of the Memorial’s experts to utilise our vast digital archive. Researchers – both amateur and professional – can obtain advice regarding service records, war diaries and official histories, all for free.
