Anzac Day 2015 at the Memorial: Start planning – it’s going to be big!

2 mins read

With Anzac Day 2015 commemorative services less than a month away, the Australian War Memorial is encouraging people seeking to attend the event to start planning their trip and to prepare early for the historic centenary anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.

Record crowds are expected at the Dawn Service and the National Ceremony and, owing to increased demand, all reserved seats for the National Ceremony have now been allocated.

Memorial Director Dr Brendan Nelson encouraged people to attend the ceremony and watch from outside the reserved seating or on one of the six large screens that will be located in the Memorial grounds. He also advised that the Roll of Honour name projections will be on display all morning and that readings drawn from the letters and diaries of Australian servicemen and servicewomen will start at about 4.25 am.

Road closures will be in place from 3.30 am until 1.00 pm on Saturday 25 April. These will affect the traffic flow around Treloar Crescent, Limestone Avenue, and Anzac Parade.

The public is encouraged to use available shuttle services and public transport. There will be parking on-site for mobility-impaired visitors; however, only vehicles displaying a government-issued parking pass will be granted access to these areas. Shuttle services will be available for both the Dawn Service and the National Ceremony, leaving from Majura Park Shopping Centre (free), Russell Offices (free), and the Canberra Centre ($2).

NB: Services from the Canberra Centre drop off at the intersection of Blamey Crescent and Anzac Parade. Mobility-impaired visitors are encouraged to use the other park-and-ride services.

Action Buses will run a free service to the Dawn Service from Gungahlin, Belconnen, City, Woden and Tuggeranong Bus Stations. These services operate from 4 am to 5 am. Action Buses will also operate a normal weekend schedule for the National Ceremony. Buses will divert along Treloar Crescent, and drop off at a temporary bus stop located in Treloar Crescent behind Anzac Hall. For further information, please visit: http://www.action.act.gov.au/  Return services for all buses and shuttles will commence 20 minutes after the conclusion of each ceremony, with buses picking up from the same locations. All services are wheelchair-accessible.
