In recognition of the 70th anniversary of the retirement of the Avro Lancaster W4783 “G for George”, currently on display at the Australian War Memorial, the Royal Australian Mint has produced a commemorative collectible coin to mark the occasion.

The release also coincides with the annual Bomber Command wreathlaying ceremony held on the Memorial grounds this Sunday 1 June 2014.

The Avro Lancaster, known with affection as “G for George”, has a remarkable history participating in 90 operational missions over Germany and occupied Europe during the height of the bomber offensive in the Second World War.

From the time it was built in 1942 until its retirement from active service in 1944 the bomber was flown by No. 460 Squadron RAAF. It is one of only a handful of the world’s surviving Lancasters from the Second World War.

The Royal Australian Mint has produced this coin in honour of the aircraft, its many crews and all Australians who flew in Bomber Command. The coin features G for George over a background drawn from the markings on the bombers side, signifying successful missions.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer the Hon Mr Steven Ciobo said the coin is a fitting way to remember those who risked their lives above the battlefields during war and conflict.

“The creation of a coin is a special way to share stories and experiences as well as honour those that have fallen,” said Mr Ciobo.

“G for George” is one of the most popular exhibits at the Australian War Memorial. The aircraft is currently on display in the Striking by night exhibition in Anzac Hall, a permanent display featuring a dramatic sound-and-light show that re-creates a night bombing operation over Berlin in December 1943. Three German Messerschmitt fighter aircraft also feature in the display. The commemorative coin retails for $13.50 and will be made available online through the Memorial Shop and via the Royal Australian Mint.
