The last gasp: centenary of the August Offensive on Gallipoli

This month the Australian War Memorial is involved in a number of activities to commemorate the centenary of the August Offensive that took place on Gallipoli during the First World War.

 

In early August 1915, after three long months of stalemate, Australian, New Zealand, British, and Indian troops launched a series of assaults against Turkish strongpoints on the Gallipoli peninsula. This was an all-out attempt to break the deadlock and force a decisive victory. It would become known as the August Offensive.

Rare German tank Mephisto on display at the Australian War Memorial

Mephisto, the last remaining First World War German A7V tank, has gone on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra as part of commemorations of the Centenary of the First World War.

In collaboration with the Queensland Museum, this is the first time the rare tank has been displayed outside Brisbane since it was transported from Europe after the end of the First World War. 

Dr Brendan Nelson, Director of the Australian War Memorial, said Mephisto added yet another element to the myriad of stories told through the Memorial.

Rare German tank Mephisto on display at the Australian War Memorial

Batemans Bay Hospital to host Australian War Memorial exhibition

The Australian War Memorial and Batemans Bay District Hospital have joined forces to present a unique First World War photographic display for patients and visitors to view over the next two weeks.

Anzac images, photographs from a Gallipoli doctor will go on display at Batemans Bay District Hospital from 25 July to 7 August.

Australian National University Professor Joan Beaumont and Australian War Memorial historians Dr Lachlan Grant and Aaron Pegram will tonight launch their new joint publication Beyond surrender: Australian prisoners of war in the twentieth century.
