Australian War Memorial holds 1,000th Last Post Ceremony

At 4.55 pm today the Australian War Memorial will commemorate its 1,000th Last Post Ceremony, featuring the story of Flight Sergeant Lindsay Arthur Bayley, who was killed on active service with No. 9 Squadron, Royal Air Force, during the Second World War.

Each Last Post Ceremony commemorates the personal story of one of the more than 102,000 Australians whose names are recorded on the Memorial’s Roll of Honour in recognition of the service and sacrifice of all Australian servicemen and servicewomen who have died in war.

Holidaymakers and visitors reach record number this Christmas period

Holidaymakers and visitors have descended on Canberra and the Australian War Memorial in record numbers this Christmas holiday period.

Last week the Memorial had 30,378 visitors – an increase of 17% on the previous year, which was in itself a record with the opening of the new First World War galleries to the public.

Large numbers visited the Memorial’s exhibitions and galleries, as well as attending the Last Post Ceremony and staying for the Commemorative Area late night openings throughout January.

Holiday-makers and visitors to Canberra will be treated to a broad range of activities at the Australian War Memorial as part of its summer holiday program Sights, sounds, and stories.

Director, Dr Brendan Nelson, today presented the Memorial’s wide-ranging program of activities and tours planned for visitors to Canberra during the summer period, catering from young children through to the veteran community.

Medal group of Australian army nursing sister and POW Vivian Bullwinkel donated to the Australian War Memorial


The medal group of Australia’s most distinguished nurse, the late Lieutenant Colonel Vivian Statham (née Bullwinkel) AO MBE ARRC ED FNM, was today presented to the Australian War Memorial in a private handover ceremony.

Bushmaster goes on permanent display outside Australian War Memorial

An Australian Army Protected Mobility Vehicle or “Bushmaster” that saw action in Iraq and Afghanistan was installed today for permanent display on the grounds of the Australian War Memorial.

Director of the Memorial Dr Brendan Nelson said he was honoured to have the Bushmaster, manufactured by Thales Australia, displayed on the grounds for visitors to experience and get a sense of the danger Australian soldiers endure while on deployment.
